Taiwan’s Brightest Young Scientists Celebrated at Inaugural Scopus Award Ceremony

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, and Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU) Presidents’ Forum, have presented eight Taiwanese scientists with a Scopus Award for their outstanding achievements in research. This is the first time that the Scopus Awards have been introduced in Taiwan.

The award ceremony took place on November 28 and was held at National Cheng Kung University, Tainan City, and was attended by 100 guests from the region’s scientific community. Chairman of SATU Presidents’ Forum and President of National Cheng Kung University, Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung, and Dr. Lucia S. Lin, Deputy Minister of Education for Taiwan, presented the awards.

With the Scopus Awards, Elsevier supports and rewards researchers in their quest to advance science across multiple disciplines and their contributions to the academic community of the region they are based.

The Scopus Awards in Taiwan attracted high-quality submissions from across Taiwan, and were evaluated by independent subject experts for each of the award categories. Elsevier provided quantitative analyses using data from Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature

The award recipients, representing academic research excellence in three different fields of science, are:

Acceptance Speech
I am humbled and honored to win the 2014 Scopus Young Researcher Award for Computer Science. I want to thank the SATU and Elsevier for giving me the opportunity to take part in this competition. I love research, every minute of it; however academic research is a long lonely road. With this award, I hope to continue to cooperate with various scholars in different fields. I would not be here without my brilliant partner and students, so I want to share this award with my research team and Yuan Ze University. Finally, I can only say thank you again for the honor of inviting me here.

"Fostering scholarly regional exchange and cooperation is one of SATU’s objectives and the Scopus Awards is a perfect platform to encourage more early-career academics to collaborate widely to gain exposure,” said Dr. Hwung. “We are delighted to work with Elsevier to celebrate and support up-and-coming scientists in Taiwan.”

Lim Kok Keng, Elsevier’s Managing Director of Research Solutions for Asia Pacific, said, “These researchers are already making significant contributions within the academic community, and their work will eventually shape the research landscape of the future. Our goal is to continue supporting these scientists with our high-quality content and solutions to help them achieve their aspirations. Throughout the Asia Pacific region, Elsevier collaborates with many key academic bodies to recognize young research talent with similar Scopus awards.”
